Two methods, two logics
Shampooing (foam or water extraction) works with product: a detergent solution is injected into the fabric, agitated, then extracted with the dirt. Dry steam works with temperature: steam above 100 °C lifts grease and kills dust mites and bacteria without leaving any product residue in the fibres. Both “clean” — but they do not leave behind the same sofa.
When steam wins
- Embedded odours (pets, tobacco, humidity): heat neutralises odour molecules where shampoo often only masks them for a few weeks.
- Dust mites and allergies: only steam genuinely sanitises — the mattress benefits fully, recommended twice a year for allergy sufferers.
- Delicate fabrics that fear soaking: dry steam barely wets, so drying is measured in hours, not days.
When shampoo still makes sense
A fabric heavily soiled with grease (hands, snacks, hair) may need a detergent pre-treatment before steam: the product lifts the greasy film, the steam rinses and sanitises. That is actually our usual approach — zone-by-zone degreasing, then a steam pass that rinses without soaking. Leather, on the other hand, never receives direct steam or water-based shampoo — only dedicated products and reconditioning.
The real criterion: drying
The number one risk in upholstery cleaning is not the method — it is the moisture that stays behind. A divan that dries slowly develops halos and musty smells, and the problem ends up worse than before. Dry steam reduces that risk to almost nothing; a badly extracted shampoo does not. If someone promises a drying time “of about a week”, the method used was simply too wet.
And the mattress?
For the mattress the debate is settled: steam, always. Humidity stains and dust mites live in the first layers of foam and fabric; a shampoo would inject water exactly where it should not go. Steam sanitises the surface in depth without saturating the foam — and the fresh smell is immediate.
